Crown Castle vs SBA Communications, after the October 23, 2026 SpaceX rally: SBA is the cheaper tower stock on cash flow. At the October 23 close, Crown Castle traded at 18.7 times its 2026 AFFO guidance, while SBA traded at 15.2 times. Crown Castle pays more income, a 4.94% dividend yield against 2.71%. But it pays out 92% of AFFO, against SBA’s 41%, and only Crown Castle was named in the SpaceX talks.
Key takeaways
- Crown Castle closed up 9.10% at $86.00 on October 23 after the SpaceX report.
- SBA trades at 15.2x 2026 AFFO guidance, against 18.7x for Crown Castle.
- SpaceX reportedly wants at least 80,000 US sites, double Crown Castle’s roughly 40,000 towers.
What happened to tower stocks on October 23, 2026?
Tower REITs rallied on October 23, 2026, while the rest of the market fell. After Thursday’s close, Bloomberg reported that SpaceX is in talks to secure at least 80,000 US cell sites, with Crown Castle as one counterparty. Crown Castle closed up 9.10% and SBA up 3.57%. On the same news, the three big carriers sold off.
Investing.com’s summary of the Bloomberg report says the deals could be worth billions and would support SpaceX’s push to become a fourth nationwide wireless carrier. Nothing is signed.
The two stocks finished in very different places. Per StockAnalysis closing data, Crown Castle ended at $86.00 (+$7.17) and SBA at $184.75 (+$6.36). International Business Times had SBA up about 9%, at $193.73, earlier in the session. That means SBA gave back more than half of its intraday gain before the close.
The tape around the move was ugly. TheStreet reported that the Dow fell about 1.2% on Friday, and that WTI crude traded above $103. Tower stocks were one of the few places that caught a bid.
Crown Castle vs SBA Communications: which tower stock is cheaper?
SBA is cheaper. Each stock’s own 2026 AFFO guidance makes the point: Crown Castle trades at 18.7x, SBA at 15.2x. Put another way, a dollar in SBA buys 6.59 cents of annual AFFO, and a dollar in Crown Castle buys 5.35 cents. Crown Castle’s higher dividend comes from paying out almost everything it earns, not from cheaper cash flow.
Crown Castle’s October 21 third-quarter release sets the 2026 AFFO midpoint at $4.60 per share. SBA’s August 3 second-quarter release, filed with the SEC, guides 2026 AFFO to $11.95–$12.40 per share, a $12.175 midpoint.

One caution on the SBA side: its guidance is almost three months old and will be refreshed on November 2. Crown Castle’s guidance was updated two days before the rally.
Which tower stock pays the bigger dividend, and is it safe?
Crown Castle pays more income, $4.25 a year for a 4.94% yield, against SBA’s $5.00 a year and 2.71% yield. Crown Castle’s payout eats about 92% of its 2026 AFFO midpoint, though, and SBA’s uses about 41%. SBA keeps more cash for growth, buybacks or a bigger dividend later. Crown Castle has little room left.
The release shows Crown Castle paid $1.0625 per share in the third quarter, unchanged from a year earlier. SBA’s filing shows a $1.25 quarterly dividend, payable September 17, 2026.
The Treasury problem
Here is the skeptical point. Even after Thursday’s bond rally, Yahoo Finance reported the 10-year Treasury yield at 5.02% on October 22. Crown Castle’s 4.94% dividend yield sits below a risk-free note.
A buyer of Crown Castle for income is accepting equity risk, roughly 6.5x leverage and DISH churn for less current yield than the government pays. We walked through the same trade-off for dividend funds in Dividend ETFs vs Treasuries.
What does a $10,000 position in each stock earn?
At October 23 closing prices, $10,000 in Crown Castle pays about $494 a year in dividends, and the same amount in SBA pays about $271. The AFFO behind each position flips the ranking, though. Your SBA stake earns about $659 of AFFO a year, against $535 for Crown Castle, and SBA keeps about $388 of it.
- Crown Castle: $10,000 ÷ $86.00 = 116.28 shares. Dividends: 116.28 × $4.25 = $494.19. AFFO: 116.28 × $4.60 = $534.88. Retained: $534.88 − $494.19 = $40.70.
- SBA Communications: $10,000 ÷ $184.75 = 54.13 shares. Dividends: 54.13 × $5.00 = $270.64. AFFO: 54.13 × $12.175 = $658.99. Retained: $658.99 − $270.64 = $388.36.
- 10-year Treasury, for reference: $10,000 × 5.02% (Oct 22 yield) = $502 a year in coupon income, with no equity risk.
Retained AFFO isn’t cash in your pocket. It is what management can reinvest or return later. SBA keeps about $348 more of it per $10,000 each year. Crown Castle hands you about $224 more in cash today.
How much of the SpaceX deal is priced into Crown Castle?
A good part of it, for a deal that doesn’t exist yet. Crown Castle’s one-day gain added $7.17 a share, which is about 1.7 years of its current dividend. Each turn of AFFO multiple is worth $4.60 a share, or 5.3% of the price. Friday’s move added about 1.6 turns, from 17.1x to 18.7x.
TIKR puts Crown Castle near 18x forward AFFO after the jump, below its five-year average of 19x and far below a late-2021 peak of 29x. On that framing, the stock is not stretched against its own history.
Why SpaceX can cut both ways
Crown Castle’s biggest tenants are AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. A well-funded fourth carrier would add leases, but it could also squeeze the incumbents that pay most of the rent.
Bernstein’s Laurent Yoon, quoted by TIKR, called a commitment to 80,000 macro sites “a point of no return” for SpaceX. Bernstein also noted, per IBTimes, that buying spectrum doesn’t commit SpaceX to leasing towers.
Scale is the other limit. Eighty thousand sites is twice Crown Castle’s roughly 40,000 towers, so any program that size would have to involve several landlords. That is a quiet argument for SBA, whose 17,362 US sites put it in the pool even though it was not named.
Which tower REIT carries more risk?
The two carry similar balance-sheet risk and different business risk. Leverage is close: SBA reported 6.4x net debt to annualized adjusted EBITDA at mid-year, and Crown Castle works out to about 6.5x on our math. Crown Castle is a pure US bet, now without its fiber arm. SBA has about a third of its leasing revenue outside the US, which brings currency and emerging-market exposure.
Crown Castle’s release shows net debt of $17.60 billion and third-quarter adjusted EBITDA of $673 million. Annualized, that is $2.69 billion, which gives our 6.5x figure. Its debt is 97% fixed rate, with a weighted average maturity of about seven years.
The company finished selling its fiber and small cell businesses on May 1, 2026, for $8.4 billion of net cash. It has bought back $1.04 billion of stock in the first nine months of the year.
DISH is the scar tissue for both companies. Crown Castle’s DISH terminations cut third-quarter billings by $61 million, and its 2026 outlook assumes $220 million of DISH-related non-renewals. SBA’s 2026 revenue bridge carries a $56 million EchoStar churn hit, all in its domestic segment.
Rates matter too. Both companies borrow heavily, which is why we tracked the long end closely in MBB vs IEF.
Which tower stock fits which investor?
Crown Castle suits investors who want maximum current income and a direct, named link to a possible SpaceX contract. SBA suits investors who care more about cash-flow value, dividend coverage and room for dividend growth. Neither suits investors who need more than the 10-year Treasury pays with no drawdown risk.
| Investor goal | Better fit on the numbers | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Highest current dividend yield | Crown Castle | 4.94% vs 2.71% |
| Lowest price per dollar of AFFO | SBA | 15.2x vs 18.7x |
| Dividend coverage and growth room | SBA | 41% payout vs 92% |
| Direct exposure to SpaceX talks | Crown Castle | Named in the Bloomberg report; SBA was not |
| Pure US tower exposure | Crown Castle | ~40,000 US towers, no international segment |
| Geographic diversification | SBA | About 32% of Q2 leasing revenue from outside the US |
| Risk-free income | Neither | 10-year Treasury at 5.02% (Oct 22) |

What to watch next
Four events could change this comparison over the next few months: a carrier earnings report, a Fed decision, SBA’s refreshed guidance and Crown Castle’s first 2027 outlook. Any confirmed SpaceX lease would matter more than all of them, but no date exists for one.
- October 26, 2026: Verizon earnings. This is the first read from a major tower tenant since the SpaceX report, and the first chance for carrier commentary on capex and leasing.
- October 27–28, 2026: FOMC meeting. The Fed’s calendar sets the decision for October 28. Rate-sensitive REIT multiples move with the outcome.
- November 2, 2026, after the close: SBA third-quarter results. SBA’s updated 2026 AFFO guidance will reset the 15.2x multiple used here. Zacks consensus, cited by IBTimes, calls for FFO of $3.12 a share.
- Early 2027: Crown Castle’s 2027 outlook, due with fourth-quarter results. CFO Sunit Patel has said he expects 2026 to mark the low point for organic growth. No date is set yet.

Which tower stock has the higher dividend yield?
Crown Castle, at 4.94% on a $4.25 annual dividend. SBA yields 2.71% on $5.00 a year. Both figures use October 23 closing prices.

The bottom line
On cash flow, SBA wins the Crown Castle vs SBA Communications comparison. It is about 19% cheaper per dollar of AFFO, its dividend is covered more than twice, and it has the same leverage.
Crown Castle wins on only two things: current yield, and being the named party in an unsigned SpaceX negotiation. Its 4.94% yield is lower than the 10-year Treasury, and it pays out 92% of AFFO. Unless a signed SpaceX lease shows up in its 2027 outlook, investors are paying a premium multiple for a headline.
