The Nscale Anthropic deal may be about to double. Bloomberg reported on October 19 that the two companies are negotiating a second compute contract worth about $45 billion, for a 460 MW building at Nscale’s Monarch campus in West Virginia. Added to the up-to-$44.6 billion agreement signed in August, Anthropic’s commitments to Nscale would approach $90 billion, weeks before Nscale’s planned NYSE listing.
Key takeaways
- The new talks cover about $45 billion for a second 460 MW Monarch building.
- Nscale’s S-1 shows only $2.6 billion of its $103.4 billion contract book is active.
- Some IPO investors want a $16 billion to $19 billion valuation, not $30 billion.
What is the new Nscale Anthropic deal?
It is a second, separate compute contract still under negotiation. Nscale would supply Anthropic with about $45 billion of AI computing capacity from a second building at its Monarch campus, adding 460 MW running Nvidia’s Vera Rubin chips. Nothing is signed. Bloomberg says terms could change.
Bloomberg broke the story Monday, citing people familiar with the talks. Reuters then confirmed it with its own source, Investing.com reported. Neither company commented.
According to Bloomberg, as summarized by Yahoo Finance, the deal could be finalized within days. Anthropic would also hold a right of first refusal on Monarch’s expected third building.
How it builds on the August contract
The first deal is already in Nscale’s prospectus. The S-1 filed on September 18 says the Anthropic agreements, signed August 25, “provide for aggregate payments to us of up to approximately $44.6 billion.” We covered that contract in our August report on the first Anthropic Nscale deal.
The new talks would repeat that template one building over. Same customer, same campus, same chip generation, roughly the same price.
| Item | First deal (signed) | Second deal (in talks) |

How big would Anthropic become in Nscale’s backlog?
Very big. Nscale’s S-1 lists about $103.4 billion of active and contracted value as of August 31. If the new $45 billion is fully additive, the book rises to roughly $148 billion. Anthropic alone would then account for about $90 billion, or around 60% of it.
That is our arithmetic, not a company figure. It assumes no other contract changes, and one already has. Microsoft walked away from the Loughton site in England, as we reported in our story on the Microsoft Nscale exit. Nscale has not said what that contract was worth.
The growth curve is steep. Reuters notes that Nscale’s contracted value rose from about $100 million to more than $103 billion in two and a half years.
Paper backlog versus live capacity
Here is the number that matters most. The S-1 reports only about $2.6 billion of that $103.4 billion as active. On a $148 billion book, live contracts would be under 2% of the total.
Everything else depends on buildings, power plants and financing that do not yet exist.
Can Nscale actually build Monarch?
That is the open question. Monarch has room to grow, but almost none of it is built. Power depends on on-site gas generation that still needs permits. And when Nscale filed its S-1, it had no binding financing for the GPUs behind the first Anthropic contract.
The S-1 says Monarch, in Mason County, “can deliver up to 8GW of gross behind-the-meter power.” Nscale expects to develop up to 2 GW of generation by the first half of 2028. It bought the site with its acquisition of AIPCorp on March 31, 2026.
The fine print is tougher. A close reading of the S-1 by Decoding Discontinuity found these terms in the first Anthropic contract:
- Anthropic pays nothing until each tranche of capacity is delivered and accepted.
- There is no prepayment, deposit, letter of credit or guarantee in the unredacted terms.
- Anthropic can terminate if Nscale misses certain delivery deadlines.
- Nscale must make “best efforts” to secure financing, and it had no binding commitments at filing.
The same analysis puts company-wide equipment and construction commitments at $27.5 billion, against $1.5 billion of cash as of June 30. A second Anthropic building would add to that gap before it adds a dollar of revenue.
Microsoft was here first
Monarch did not start as an Anthropic project. Microsoft signed a non-binding letter of intent for 1.35 GW at the campus, and it lapsed over the summer, according to Decoding Discontinuity. TradingKey reports that the letter dated from March 2026 and that Anthropic stepped in afterward.
So the campus has already lost one anchor tenant before it delivered any power. That should temper any reading of the new talks as pure demand.
What does the deal mean for the Nscale IPO?
The timing looks deliberate. Nscale is pitching a roughly $30 billion valuation and meeting resistance. A second $45 billion Anthropic contract gives the roadshow a fresh headline just days after the Microsoft exit. It also deepens Nscale’s dependence on one customer.
Nscale plans to list on the NYSE under the ticker NSCL, according to its S-1. Some investors want a range of $16 billion to $19 billion instead of $30 billion, Bloomberg reported, as summarized by Quartz. Formal marketing has not started.
Nscale is not short of fresh money. Last month it closed a $3.36 billion pre-IPO financing led by Third Point, with Nvidia and Apollo participating, TradingKey reports. That is a small sum next to the cost of two Vera Rubin buildings.
Why Anthropic keeps signing
Anthropic is spreading its compute bets across several neoclouds. TradingKey lists an agreement of about $50 billion with Fluidstack among its other large deals. Lambda’s $35 billion Anthropic contract is another.
Anthropic has its own IPO pressure. Investors have pushed it to lower its valuation target, Bloomberg reported, a trend we tracked in our look at the Anthropic IPO valuation reset. Locking in compute now is a bet that demand outruns that caution.
Why this matters
Neocloud valuations rest on contracted backlog, and this deal shows how concentrated that backlog is. One AI lab could soon represent most of a would-be public company’s future revenue. The money only arrives if power, chips and financing all show up on time.
The broader market is already nervous. CoreWeave shares fell last week over debt concerns, helping spark a global AI stock selloff, Reuters reported. Australia’s Firmus pulled its IPO this month.
For investors, the deal is a test of the model. Customers sign huge capacity contracts, neoclouds borrow against them, and public markets are asked to pay for the backlog. Nscale’s listing will show how much investors will pay for that. This article is not financial advice.
What to watch next
- Coming days: a signed second Anthropic contract, which Bloomberg says could land within days.
- October 26, 2026: West Virginia’s public meeting on the draft air permit for 864 gas engines at Monarch, according to Decoding Discontinuity. Comments close October 30.
- An amended S-1: look for the new contract, a revised backlog after Loughton, delivery deadlines and a price range.
- Financing news: any binding debt or equity commitment for the Monarch GPU orders.
FAQ
Has Anthropic signed a second deal with Nscale?
Not yet. Bloomberg and Reuters report talks for about $45 billion. Terms could change, and neither company has commented.
How much is the first Anthropic Nscale deal worth?
Up to about $44.6 billion, according to Nscale’s S-1. The agreements were signed on August 25, 2026, for capacity at the Monarch campus.
Where is the Monarch campus?
In Mason County, West Virginia. The S-1 says it can deliver up to 8 GW of behind-the-meter power once fully built.
Is Nscale a public company?
No. It filed to list on the NYSE under the ticker NSCL on September 18. It has not started formal marketing.
What valuation is Nscale seeking?
About $30 billion, according to Bloomberg. Some investors are pushing for $16 billion to $19 billion.
Does Anthropic pay Nscale upfront?
No, under the first contract. Payments start only after each tranche is delivered and accepted, according to an analysis of the S-1.
The bottom line
Expect the second contract to be signed and to feature in an amended prospectus. It will lift Nscale’s headline backlog toward $150 billion. It will not fix the real problem: almost none of that backlog is live, and Monarch still needs power, permits and financing. The deal makes Nscale bigger on paper and riskier in practice. IPO buyers should price it that way.
