4–7 minutes

Anthropic’s IPO valuation talk fell about $500 billion, to roughly $1.5 trillion, after third-quarter revenue growth slowed to 45%. Microsoft walked away from a 50 MW Nscale site weeks before Nscale’s planned NYSE listing, putting its $103.4 billion contract book under scrutiny. And Modal raised $750 million at $15.75 billion, the week’s largest new AI round.

Key takeaways

  • Public investors will pay for AI growth, but not at any price: Anthropic’s $1.5 trillion talk is 25% below the earlier $2 trillion.
  • Power, not contracts, is the bottleneck: only $2.6 billion of Nscale’s $103.4 billion backlog is tied to live capacity.
  • Model prices keep falling: DeepSeek cut the average cost of a coding task about 60%, and Meta gave away an 816-billion-parameter model.

AI deals and funding

Anthropic’s IPO gets repriced. Some current and prospective investors are now discussing a valuation of about $1.5 trillion for Anthropic’s planned November listing, down from the roughly $2 trillion floated earlier, Reuters reported. The trigger was growth: Q3 revenue rose 45% to $16.8 billion, after more than doubling in Q2. Even at the lower price, Series H buyers from May would be sitting on a gain of about 55%. Read the full breakdown.

Microsoft quits Nscale’s Loughton site. Microsoft terminated its agreement for the planned 50 MW campus in Essex, The Telegraph reported, after grid officials signaled no power until the 2030s. Microsoft contracts make up up to about $43.8 billion of Nscale’s $103.4 billion book, and the news lands just ahead of its planned NYSE listing under the ticker NSCL. What it means for the IPO.

IREN rallies on an Anthropic contract nobody has priced. The Information reported a multiyear AI cloud agreement between IREN and Anthropic, and IREN shares jumped about 9% overnight. Neither company has confirmed it, and no price, term or GPU count is public. It may even be the unnamed “frontier AI lab” contract IREN announced in August. Why the name matters more than the number.

Nvidia weighs a bigger bet on Reflection AI. Nvidia, already in for $800 million, is weighing a purchase of the open-weight lab, which had sought a $25 billion valuation. What a deal could look like.

Modal leads the week’s new rounds. The AI inference and agent-sandbox cloud raised a $750 million Series D at $15.75 billion, led by Accel, and says its annualized run rate has passed $1 billion, according to TNW. Optical-switching chipmaker Salience Labs raised $125 million and China’s Moss Intelligence about $149 million. See every round in the tracker.

Launches that moved money

DeepSeek makes coding agents cheaper again. DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017 scores 77.0 on DeepSWE and cuts the average cost per coding task about 60%, to under $0.20, with token prices unchanged. The savings come from using fewer tokens per task, which is the number that shows up on a developer’s bill. The cost math.

Meta opens Muse Spark, and prices Muse Wonder at the top. Meta released Muse Spark Open, an 816-billion-parameter model developers can use for free, though by Meta’s own numbers it trails China’s Kimi K3 on coding, 76.4 to 85.0. Days earlier, Meta priced Muse Wonder at $4 per million input tokens and $20 output, the same as Claude Opus 5.5, while it trails Opus 52 to 58 on an independent index. Muse Spark Open and Muse Wonder pricing.

Claude Startups hits pause. Anthropic paused its startup offer, a free Claude Team year plus $1,000 in API credit worth about $7,000 in all, after applications ran at 21 times the usual pace in 48 hours. Who loses out.

Investing: what changed this week

Strategy faces an index exit. MSCI’s exclusion rules could remove Strategy from its global indexes on November 30, and MSTR fell 9.56% to $136.83 on October 16. Index removal forces passive funds to sell, regardless of what they think of the stock. The passive-selling math.

The CLO ETF fee war narrows. VanEck cut CLOI’s expense ratio to 0.29% on October 7, but that is still 9 basis points above JAAA’s 0.20%. On a $10,000 position, the gap is $9 a year before any difference in yield. JAAA vs CLOI.

AI Funding Tracker update

Four rows were added to the main table this week: three new rounds (Modal, Moss Intelligence and Salience Labs) and TypeSafe AI’s $870 million Series A, which moved over from Reported talks once its announcement was confirmed. Labelbox’s Series E was left out because it mixes equity with an undisclosed credit facility. The tracker now lists 60 rounds of $100 million or more in 2026, totaling $321.1 billion. What to watch next week

  • Tuesday, October 20: Netflix reports third-quarter results after the close, per StockTitan’s earnings calendar.
  • Wednesday, October 21: Tesla posts Q3 results after the close, with its webcast at 5:30 p.m. ET, the company said in an SEC filing.
  • Wednesday, October 21: Meta reports after the close, its first quarter since the Muse Wonder and Muse Spark Open launches. IBM, Texas Instruments and Lam Research also report that evening, per Opening Bell Daily.
  • Friday, October 23: S&P Global’s flash PMIs for October and the University of Michigan consumer sentiment reading. The Fed is in its quiet period before the October 27–28 FOMC meeting.

The bottom line

This was the week AI’s biggest numbers met their limits. Anthropic is still growing 45% a quarter, yet investors want a $500 billion discount. Nscale has $103 billion in contracts, yet a single missing grid connection cost it its anchor tenant at one site. Private money is still flowing, with Modal raising $750 million on a $1 billion run rate, but public buyers are now asking what is live, powered and paid for. With Tesla and Meta reporting on Wednesday, expect that question to follow AI spending into earnings season.
