  • ChatGPT Sponsored Agents Go Live at $60 CPMs and $200,000 Minimums

ChatGPT Sponsored Agents are now live in testing with select US advertisers. OpenAI announced the format on September 16, 2026, alongside HubSpot as its first CRM partner and Shopify as its first ecommerce partner. Advertisers face roughly $60 CPMs and $200,000 minimum commitments. OpenAI told investors it expects $2.5 billion in ad revenue this year. eMarketer says the entire US chatbot ad market will not reach half that by 2030.

    What are ChatGPT Sponsored Agents?

ChatGPT Sponsored Agents are labeled, business-backed chat sessions a user enters after clicking an ad inside ChatGPT. Instead of bouncing to a landing page, the user keeps talking — to an agent the advertiser paid for. OpenAI describes it as a way to ask follow-up questions before visiting the business site.

The format is the second act of an ad business that only started in February 2026. The first act was a plain sponsored placement. This one puts a commercial counterparty inside the conversation.

OpenAI’s own example is furniture: a shopper asks about dimensions, seating capacity, and care instructions, all inside the sponsored thread.

How a Sponsored Agent conversation works

The flow has three steps, per OpenAI’s announcement:

    1. A user sees an ad in a ChatGPT conversation and clicks it.
    2. A labeled sponsored conversation opens with the advertiser’s agent.
    3. The user asks product questions, then is directed to the business’s own site.

OpenAI has repeated two guardrails since February: “Ads do not influence model outputs,” and “Advertisers do not see user conversations or personal data.” Both are company statements, not audited claims.

    Who are the launch partners?

HubSpot and Shopify. HubSpot is the first CRM partner and Shopify the first ecommerce partner, both live from September 16, 2026. The integrations matter more than the agent format itself, because they move ChatGPT Ads into software merchants already pay for.

Inside HubSpot, businesses can connect a ChatGPT Ads account, build ads, track performance, and work leads without leaving the CRM. That is distribution OpenAI did not have to build.

Shopify’s app and the international date

Shopify merchants in the US got a free ChatGPT Ads app in the Shopify App Store on September 16, with product inventory auto-sync, conversion tracking, and targeting by audience, location, device, and category. International availability begins September 23, 2026.

Named early advertisers reported by Unite.AI include Newegg, Best Buy, Lowe’s, and VistaPrint. New advertisers are being offered a $500 credit on $500 of spend — a classic self-serve acquisition subsidy, and a tell that OpenAI wants volume, not just brand budgets.

How much does it cost to advertise on ChatGPT?

Expensive, and priced on attention rather than performance. eMarketer reports roughly $60 CPMs billed on views instead of clickthroughs, with $200,000 minimum commitments for the managed pilot. For comparison, that CPM sits in premium-video territory, not search territory.

Pilot CPM ~$60, priced on views eMarketer
    Advertiser minimum $200,000 eMarketer
Self-serve incentive $500 credit on $500 spend OpenAI / Shopify app listing

The tier split is the quiet commercial decision here. Ads run against free and $8 Go users. Everyone paying $20 or more sees none. OpenAI is monetizing the cohort that would never convert to subscription — which is the correct call, and also caps the inventory.

Can OpenAI hit its $2.5 billion ad target?

Not on current evidence. OpenAI told investors it expects $2.5 billion in ad revenue in 2026, scaling to $11 billion in 2027, $25 billion in 2028, $53 billion in 2029 and $100 billion by 2030, according to eMarketer’s April 9, 2026 report on Axios reporting. The 2030 number assumes 2.75 billion weekly users across OpenAI products.

Against that, the business crossed a $1 billion annualized run rate on August 31, 2026, per Adweek — a milestone we covered when ChatGPT Ads hit it in 200 days. Annualized is doing heavy lifting in that sentence: it is an extrapolation, not money collected.

    Where eMarketer and OpenAI disagree

eMarketer put chatbot ad revenue below $1 billion for the year and caps the entire US chatbot ad market at $5.41 billion in 2030 — a 90% miss against OpenAI’s own forecast, as Adweek reported in July.

The analyst framing is blunt: the forecast “assumes OpenAI captures search ad budgets en masse from traditional search ad sellers, dominates a fully mature chatbot ad market, and outperforms every ad format in history — all at once.”

Three things have to be true simultaneously. Historically, one of the three is hard.

    Who is affected financially?

Four groups, in descending order of exposure: OpenAI’s own balance sheet, the holding-company agencies, Google and Meta, and the merchants now being asked to fund a new channel. The Sponsored Agents format changes the pitch from impressions to conversations, which is how OpenAI justifies the price.

    • OpenAI. Ads are the non-dilutive revenue line supporting a valuation story that already runs through IPO chatter. See our coverage of the $1.5 trillion valuation talks and the IPO delay that dropped SoftBank 11%.
    • Agencies. Omnicom Media, Dentsu and WPP Media joined the pilot. At $200,000 minimums, participation is a research budget.
    • Google and Meta. Nothing in these numbers yet dents either. eMarketer’s 2030 ceiling for the whole US chatbot ad market is smaller than a single quarter of Google’s ad take.
    • Merchants. Shopify and HubSpot customers get the easiest on-ramp — and the least pricing leverage.

The agency view: influence over clicks

eMarketer’s read on the early pilot is that brands are buying “learning over ROI.” Audible, Target and Ford were among the first named participants across automotive, CPG, retail, technology, travel and entertainment. A $60 view-based CPM with no clickthrough guarantee is a reach buy dressed as a performance channel.

Is this a real business or a valuation prop?

Both, and the gap between them is the story. A $1 billion annualized run rate seven months after launch is a genuinely fast start — faster than most ad platforms in history. A $2.5 billion full-year target with four months left is a different claim entirely.

OpenAI CMO Colin Fleming has said 20% of ChatGPT’s roughly 1 billion weekly active users “show commercial intent.” That is the whole bull case in one sentence: 200 million commercially-intent users, monetized at search-like rates.

The skeptical version: commercial intent expressed to an assistant is not the same as a purchase decision at the moment of an auction. Google’s business works because the query is the intent. In ChatGPT, the intent is buried in a conversation the advertiser is contractually not allowed to see.

eMarketer principal AI analyst Nate Elliott framed the timing problem: “OpenAI can eventually get to parity [with Google and Meta] in terms of adtech partnerships if they want… But it’ll take time — and given the company’s burn rate, impending IPO, and astoundingly aggressive ad sales targets, time seems to be the one thing they don’t have.”

    Frequently asked questions

When did ChatGPT Sponsored Agents launch?

OpenAI announced the format on September 16, 2026, in testing with select US advertisers. HubSpot and Shopify integrations went live the same day.

Do ChatGPT ads appear for paying subscribers?

No. Ads run on the free tier and the $8/month Go plan. Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Education remain ad-free.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

eMarketer reports roughly $60 CPMs priced on views, with $200,000 minimum commitments in the managed pilot. New self-serve advertisers are offered a $500 credit on $500 of spend.

Can advertisers see my ChatGPT conversations?

OpenAI states that advertisers do not see user conversations or personal data, and that ads do not influence model outputs. Those are company statements; no independent audit has been published.

When does the Shopify ChatGPT Ads app go international?

September 23, 2026. The app launched for US merchants on September 16.

How much ad revenue does OpenAI actually make?

Adweek reported the business crossed a $1 billion annualized run rate on August 31, 2026. That is an extrapolation of current revenue, not collected annual revenue.

Is OpenAI’s $100 billion ad forecast credible?

eMarketer caps the entire US chatbot ad market at $5.41 billion in 2030 — roughly 5% of OpenAI’s 2030 figure, though OpenAI’s number is global and assumes 2.75 billion weekly users.

    The bottom line

Sponsored Agents is the most commercially serious thing OpenAI has shipped this quarter, and the HubSpot and Shopify integrations are the part that will actually move money. Getting inside a CRM and an ecommerce app store on day one is distribution that took Google and Meta years.

But the pricing tells you where this is: $60 view-based CPMs and $200,000 minimums are what a platform charges when it has scarce inventory and no proven conversion data. That is a seller’s market built on novelty, and novelty premiums expire.

The verdict: a real revenue line, growing fast, on a forecast nobody outside the company believes. If you are underwriting OpenAI at anything near this year’s AI IPO multiples, model the eMarketer number, not the investor deck. And watch the ad-free tier boundary — the day ads appear for $20 subscribers is the day the inventory constraint became urgent.
